How to Add GPS Coordinates (Geotag) to Photos on iPhone and Android

Every modern phone camera can save GPS coordinates to a photo's metadata automatically — but "the coordinates are in there somewhere" and "the coordinates are visible on the photo" are two very different things when you're trying to prove where a picture was taken. Here's what geotagging actually does on iPhone and Android, and three ways to get from a plain photo to one that documents its own location.

What "geotagging" actually means

Geotagging is writing GPS coordinates — and usually altitude and a timestamp — into a photo's EXIF metadata at the moment it's captured. That metadata travels inside the file. Photos apps, Google Photos, and most GIS software can read it to plot the photo on a map. But EXIF data is invisible unless something reads it out: open the JPEG in a plain image viewer or print it, and the location disappears from view entirely.

Three ways to get GPS coordinates onto a photo

1. Default camera app (EXIF only)

Both iOS's Camera app and stock Android cameras embed GPS EXIF automatically when Location Services is on. This is geotagging in its purest form — accurate, automatic, and completely invisible on the image itself. It's fine for personal photo libraries, but useless the moment someone needs to glance at a printed photo or a PDF and see where it was taken.

2. Third-party geotag/watermark apps

Photo watermark apps overlay text — often coordinates, a date, and a custom note — onto the image after (or as) it's captured. This makes location visible, but quality varies a lot: some only add a generic timestamp watermark with rounded, low-precision coordinates, and many don't also preserve the underlying GPS EXIF, so the photo looks documented but isn't machine-readable by GIS software.

3. A dedicated field camera app

Purpose-built field documentation apps — Terramark included, on both iPhone and Android — do both at once: stamp the visible coordinates (plus date, address, altitude, accuracy and compass heading) directly onto the image at capture time, and write full GPS EXIF into the file. Step-by-step: geotagging a photo with a visible stamp

  1. Grant location permission. Both platforms need Location Services (iOS) or Location (Android) enabled for the app, ideally set to "While Using" or "Precise" for the best accuracy.
  2. Wait for a GPS fix before shooting if precision matters — the first reading after opening an app is often less accurate than one taken a few seconds later, once the location service settles.
  3. Capture the photo. A field camera app stamps coordinates, date/time and any other configured fields onto the image immediately, and embeds GPS EXIF at the same time.
  4. Check the accuracy figure if your app shows one — a ±3m reading is very different from a ±30m one for anything requiring precision.
  5. Export or share knowing the location travels with the file both visibly and in metadata, so it's usable whether the recipient opens it in Preview or imports it into GIS software.

Why the visible stamp matters more than people expect

EXIF data gets stripped constantly — by messaging apps, by some cloud backup services, by anyone who screenshots a photo instead of forwarding the original file. A visible stamp survives all of that because it's part of the image itself. If a photo needs to serve as a record months or years later — for an inspection, a warranty claim, or a completed-work sign-off — the coordinates baked into the pixels are the ones that are still readable no matter how the file gets passed around.
